A Civil War-Era Tintype Portrait Restored

This badly eroded, 1/2-inch diameter locket tintype photograph dates back to the latter half of the 19th century. Because we couldn’t foresee whether the photo would emerge intact from the scanner if taken out of the locket—if it even emerged intact from the locket—we scanned it still enclosed, then gingerly removed it and scanned it directly on the flatbed. By some miracle, it survived.

Restoration Redux

This photograph of the client’s grandfather had been taken at the turn of the 20th century and had undergone an attempt at restoration elsewhere. The client emailed a copy of this restoration for rework, but the resolution was far too low. We requested the original, and from the faded remnants the full detail and clarity of the portrait emerged.
